This is for experienced midwives who want to bring calm, clarity, and confidence to their fetal monitoring conversations. The DEEP framework provides a simple, repeatable, and very customisable structure to help you cover all the important parts of the discussion you need to have to support consent for any type of fetal monitoring for labour.

The Fetal Monitoring Academy is the home for detailed resources about all aspects of fetal monitoring. The Academy is designed for midwives, doulas, obstetricians, and birth educators who work with women during their pregnancy and birth – but anyone who is looking to develop a deep knowledge about fetal monitoring research is welcome. Academy membership also includes access to the exclusive Common Room – a safe private online space to connect with Dr Kirsten Small and other Academy members.

Enrolments open in February and August.

For Australian midwives

In November 2025, RANZCOG updated their Intrapartum Fetal Surveillance Guideline. This has been an historically challenging guideline for many as it isn’t well aligned with evidence and has been used to limit women’s options. The updates have improved the visibility of the quality of the evidence used. More importantly they also open up new opportunities for woman-centred approaches to fetal monitoring in labour.

But you have to know what they are and how to use them. Join me in the workshop and I’ll let you know what they are…
